Anchorage is a small, home-rule city of roughly 2,400 residents in eastern Jefferson County, built along the old Louisville and Frankfort Railroad line and incorporated in 1878.
Named For A Riverboat Captain's Retirement
The town takes its name from “The Anchorage,” the retirement estate of steamboat captain James W. Goslee — tradition holds an anchor from his ship, the Matamora, was mounted in a locomotive driving wheel and still stands near the old rail depot.
An Olmsted-Designed Town Plan
In 1914, local distiller Isaac Wolfe Bernheim commissioned the Olmsted Brothers firm to design Anchorage's stone bridges, triangular intersections, and park-like streetscape — the same firm behind Louisville's Olmsted Parks system.
A National Register Historic District
The Anchorage Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, with its boundaries later extended to cover most of the town's railroad-era homes and streets.
Home Rule Governance & A+ Schools
Anchorage Independent Public School (PreK–8) is A+ rated and was named a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School, and the city itself has grown from a 5th-class city to home rule-class status in 2015.
