By Ryan Brown, REALTOR® · RE/MAX Premier Properties · Updated October 2, 2026 · 11 min readHow to check which schools serve an address
- Find the county. Jefferson County addresses are served by Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), except Anchorage, which has its own independent K–8 district. Oldham and Bullitt counties have their own districts.
- Look up the exact address. For JCPS, use the JCPS School Finder. Choose the school year your child will actually enroll, because boundaries can change.
- Check performance. The Kentucky Department of Education’s School Report Card has test results, demographics, and more for every public school.
- Visit. Tours and parent nights tell you more than any rating.
Never rely on a listing’s school info alone. It’s often outdated or wrong. I help clients confirm the assignment before they write an offer.
How JCPS school assignment works
JCPS uses what it calls a managed choice system (JCPS student assignment).
- Every address has “resides” schools. For elementary school, addresses are assigned to a cluster of schools, not one school. Middle and high school assignments are also based on address.
- Choice Zone: since the 2023–24 school year, students in a designated Choice Zone, mostly in west Louisville, can attend school closer to home or choose from a set of schools based on their address.
- You can apply elsewhere to magnet schools, magnet programs, and optional programs (see below).
Because assignment depends on the exact address, two homes on nearby streets can have different schools. Always check the specific property.
Questions? The JCPS Office of School Choice is at (502) 485-6250.
JCPS application dates
For the 2027–28 school year, JCPS’s application window for elementary, middle, and high school is November 2 through December 18, 2026 (JCPS).
- Applications are not first-come, first-served. They’re all processed together after the window closes.
- Late applications are accepted, but they’re handled based on space, so apply on time if you can.
Moving during the school year?
If you buy after the deadline, your child is enrolled at the resides school for the new address, and you can apply for other programs in the next cycle. Planning a closing around the school calendar is something I help families with often.
Magnet, traditional, and optional programs
- Magnet schools and programs: specialized focuses such as STEM, the arts, and law, plus competitive programs like duPont Manual High School in Old Louisville. Some have admission requirements.
- Traditional schools: a more structured program with uniforms and strict expectations. Examples include Greathouse/Shryock Traditional Elementary, Barret Traditional Middle, and Valley Traditional High.
- Optional programs: specialty programs housed inside regular schools.
Programs and admission rules change, so check the current JCPS Choices guides before you count on one.
Oldham County Schools
Oldham County Schools covers the whole county, including La Grange, Crestwood, Goshen, Buckner, and Pewee Valley. It’s one of the biggest reasons families move to Oldham County.
- Nine elementary schools, four middle schools, and four high schools: Buckner, North Oldham, Oldham County, and South Oldham. There’s also an arts academy, a career center, and other programs.
- Attendance zones are set by address. Use the district’s boundary information to confirm.
Part of Prospect is in Oldham County, so check which county an address is in before you assume.
Bullitt County Public Schools
Bullitt County Public Schools serves the whole county, including Shepherdsville, Mount Washington, and Hillview. It has 13 elementary schools, six middle schools, and three high schools: Bullitt Central (Shepherdsville), Bullitt East (Mount Washington), and North Bullitt, plus alternative and technical programs.
Anchorage Independent School
Anchorage has its own independent school district: one PreK–8 school with about 400 students. It was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2021. Students living in the district attend high school through arrangements with nearby districts, so ask the school how this works for your family.
The district boundary is much smaller than the 40223 ZIP code, so an “Anchorage” mailing address doesn’t guarantee Anchorage schools. Check the specific address.
Private and parochial schools
Louisville has a large private and Catholic school system. Many families choose a neighborhood with these schools in mind. Commonly mentioned schools include St. Xavier, Trinity, Assumption, Sacred Heart Academy, Presentation Academy, Holy Cross, and St. Mary Academy, plus many parish elementary schools.
Private schools don’t depend on your address, but the commute does. I factor in drive time when we’re looking at homes.
Schools and home value
- Areas with highly rated districts, like Oldham County and parts of eastern Jefferson County, tend to sell for more and hold demand better in slow markets.
- In Jefferson County, school choice means the address matters less than in many cities. But it still affects which resides schools and options you have, so it’s worth confirming.
- Even if you don’t have kids, the next buyer might. That affects resale value.
