Why Live In Schnitzelburg

Shotgun houses, corner bars, and a street game from 1800.

Schnitzelburg sits just south of Germantown, bounded by the CSX tracks to the north, Goss Avenue to the east, Clarks Lane to the south, and Shelby Street to the west. It grew up around the Goss–Texas Avenue streetcar loop, finished in 1891.

The World Dainty Championship

Every last Monday in July, the neighborhood packs George Hauck Way for the Dainty contest, a German street game played with a broomstick and a whittled peg. It’s been running for more than 50 years.

Neighborhood institutions

Hauck’s Corner (the old Hauck’s Handy Store), St. Elizabeth’s Church, and a handful of corner taverns give it a real small-town feel two miles from downtown.

One of the oldest neighborhood councils

The Schnitzelburg Area Community Council is one of the oldest neighborhood associations in Louisville, and residents take real pride in the place.

Walk to Germantown

Goss Avenue’s restaurants, the Logan Street Market, and Germantown’s bars are a short walk, and the Highlands is a five-minute drive.

The Housing, By The Numbers

Small, old, and in demand.

In the last 12 months, homes the MLS files under Schnitzelburg sold for a median of $275,000, and most sold between $235,000 and $300,000. The typical house was built around 1915 and has about 1,250 square feet, usually two bedrooms. At about $214 a square foot, it costs more per foot than the Highlands ZIP codes, because buyers compete for renovated shotguns.

01

Buyers who want walkability

You can walk to coffee, dinner, church, and a beer. Few neighborhoods at this price point can say that.

02

Singles and couples

Most homes are two-bedroom shotguns and camelbacks. If you need four bedrooms and a big yard, look elsewhere.

03

Buyers who love old houses

Original floors, tall ceilings, and brick. Just plan for older plumbing and electrical, and get a thorough inspection.

04

Sellers with a renovated home

Updated shotguns sell fast here. Pricing and photos matter because buyers compare every listing on price per square foot.

History

Named, most likely, for schnitzel.

Schnitzelburg was platted under another name, but its German immigrant settlers gave it the name that stuck.

  1. 1866

D.H. Meriwether plats the area as “Meriwether’s Enlargement.” Neighbors and other Louisvillians start calling it Schnitzelburg, most likely after the German dish. (Mental Floss)

  2. 1891

The one-way Schnitzelburg trolley loop begins along Shelby, Burnett, Texas, and Goss, and it sets the neighborhood’s boundaries. (Schnitzelburg Area Community Council)

  3. 1905

St. Elizabeth Parish opens, and Schnitzelburg grows quickly around it. (HistoricLouisville.com)

  4. 1912

Elizabeth and William Hauck open Hauck’s Handy Store on Goss Avenue. Their son George takes over in 1946. (Schnitzelburg Area Community Council)

  5. 1971

George Hauck and Charlie Vettiner revive the German street game of Dainty. It has been played every year since. (GoToLouisville)

About Ryan
"I want every Schnitzelburg client to understand the deal as well as I do before we sign anything."

A realtor who treats your Schnitzelburg deal like it's my own money.

I'm Ryan Brown, a REALTOR® with RE/MAX Premier Properties working with buyers and sellers across Louisville, Kentucky — including Schnitzelburg, Germantown, and the rest of the urban core. Before real estate, I spent four and a half years in the Marine Corps Infantry, including three deployments, then came home and used the GI Bill to attend the University of Louisville. I got my start rehabbing a $10,000 two-bedroom house, and the results hooked me on real estate ever since.

That hands-on start turned into years of steady growth — my team and I have helped close more than $20 million in real estate acquisitions and hundreds of units across the Louisville metro. These days I bring that same disciplined, numbers-first approach to Schnitzelburg buyers and sellers, whether you're buying your first home or selling one you've owned for decades.
